Starting Your First Document

The first thing you should do is close all palettes except for the work area, objects and properties palettes. This will free up vital workspace on your screen.

Click "File" and then "New" to create a new document.

Go to the Objects palette and click on "Layer."

You will get a cursor with cross hairs. Click and drag until you have the size of layer you want.

If you are inserting an image, it doesn't matter how big you make the layer--it will expand to fit your image. However, if you are pasting in text, you need to make your layer wider or the text will wrap and you will get a very long, skinny layer.

Notice that there is a strange symbol with a "c" in it next to the layer. This is an invisible element that will appear in your HTML code, but not in your document. To turn this off, click "view" and then "invisible elements."

Also notice that we now have another tag in the lower left-hand corner of the work area. This indicates that <div> is active.
